Overnight Stays

Inquire at the hospital desk or with the social worker (or other NICU staff) about accommodations in or near the hospital. These sometimes require advance reservation, while the policy in some places is to start fresh every day.

In the tristate area, there may be hotels within walking distance that are familiar with religious Jews, Chabad houses and accommodations provided by chesed organizations.

(NOTE: Some of these organizations are listed below as well as within some of the suggested links or apps.)

Outside of the tristate area, reach out to the local bikur cholim or Chabad.

Medical Sheilos

When dealing with premature infants, many sheilos arise. Halachic leniencies may apply; please do not hesitate to ask. Note that some sheilos change as the circumstances do, so you may need to ask the same question more than once. It’s important to have as much info as possible from the doctors to present sheilos properly. It is recommended to be in touch with your pediatrician as well.

Some general questions to ask your Rabbi-Rav-Dayan:

  1. What is permissible on Shabbos and Yom Tov in caring for a new mom? (i.e., electronic beds, call buttons, elevators, electronic doors)
  2. What is permissible on Shabbos and Yom Tov in caring for a premature infant?
  3. Can I communicate with the hospital on Shabbos and Yom Tov? What is the best way?
  4. What are the proper procedures for pumping on Shabbos and Yom Tov?
